More women leave the workforce to raise children than men. Therefore, the average man in any job or industry, will have more years experience. On Average.

People with more years of experience, will on average, make more money.

Therefore, if there is a wage gap, it's not because of sexism. It's because people with more experience get paid more. And if there isn't a wage gap, then there is sexism against men.

Men also work longer hours on average. Therefore more pay. Men are also more likely to ask for a raise and are more aggressive when negotiating wages. There are an enormous amount of variables to explain the gap.

If I remember correctly, the original study wasn't even trying to imply that women were paid unfairly. The media just cherry picked the one section that showed there average pay for men and women.
