I can understand getting a degree that earns you $$$. I can also understand a retiree getting a degree in a hobby subject like Medieval French History because they find that more fun than buying a boat.

What I dont grasp is why people get a worthless degree (Early Childhood Education or Gender Studies comes to mind) with the goal of using it to earn money. The ROI is clearly negative. Are they stupid? Bad at math? Irrational? Trying to nihilistically ruin their lives through eternal debt?

They go into college "just cause that's what you do after high school". They either have no idea what degree to get and just do basically prereq classes for 4 years OR they take real classes but change majors because it's either too difficult for them or doesn't leave them enough time to party every night.

It's overwhelmingly women and they always think they are going to land some super rare job like Art Gallery Curator or whatever the fuck.
