I can understand getting a degree that earns you $$$. I can also understand a retiree getting a degree in a hobby subject like Medieval French History because they find that more fun than buying a boat.

What I dont grasp is why people get a worthless degree (Early Childhood Education or Gender Studies comes to mind) with the goal of using it to earn money. The ROI is clearly negative. Are they stupid? Bad at math? Irrational? Trying to nihilistically ruin their lives through eternal debt?

Because people generally go to uni when they are 18 and have little to no clue about studying for the purpose of getting a job vs 'follow your dreams'.

On the other hand the only thing I have ever been good at or interested in is Music. I was never allowed to study Music or get any lessons because nobody in my life took !y interests seriously.

If I could have been classically trained and taught music production extensively from a young age I could have made millions from the songs I have, as opposed to wasting so long trying to figure everything out on my own in my bedroom.
