I can understand getting a degree that earns you $$$. I can also understand a retiree getting a degree in a hobby subject like Medieval French History because they find that more fun than buying a boat.

What I dont grasp is why people get a worthless degree (Early Childhood Education or Gender Studies comes to mind) with the goal of using it to earn money. The ROI is clearly negative. Are they stupid? Bad at math? Irrational? Trying to nihilistically ruin their lives through eternal debt?

Yep. It's not that a bunch of people are thinking "I really want to learn as much as I can about gender studies, I know it's a massive investment of time and money, but it's definitely worth it to me". They may have literally every person in their life telling them they need a degree (along with many people on TV they've never met), then they just pick something when they get to college.
