I can understand getting a degree that earns you $$$. I can also understand a retiree getting a degree in a hobby subject like Medieval French History because they find that more fun than buying a boat.

What I dont grasp is why people get a worthless degree (Early Childhood Education or Gender Studies comes to mind) with the goal of using it to earn money. The ROI is clearly negative. Are they stupid? Bad at math? Irrational? Trying to nihilistically ruin their lives through eternal debt?

Many careers require a degree to enter. Any degree will do so long as it comes from a university or similarly accredited learning institution.

This is a matter of law in many jurisdictions. For example, you cannot write the exam to qualify to sell life insurance in my jurisdiction without a university degree. Without passing the exam you cannot be licensed, or insured, and therefor cannot legally work in the industry. Graduating with a degree is seen that you can at least read and write to a certain level of competence, that you cannot then later argue, say in a court of law, that you don't know what the meaning of "is" is.

Having a degree also implies you are capable of learning. At least it used to. Now, more and more, university has become a brainwashing debt scam, devised to steal pension fund money via the bundling of "must be repaid" student loans as collateral upon which to build investment grade financial instruments that can be legally qualified for pension fund investment.

In other words, it's fraud from top to bottom, perpetuated by the banking industry, with political cover from the marxist left that the very same banking industry initially created and continues to finance.

The key to this fraud is student loan bankruptcy. Restoring student loan bankruptcy would collapse the entire house of cards.

Joe Biden was one of the members of congress who led the charge to eliminate student loan bankruptcy in the first place.

Bankruptcy is the greatest thing capitalism has ever invented, and it is the harsh Darwinian taskmaster that forces investment in productive activities only. Quite simply, it is be productive enough or die. Outlawing bankruptcy was the initial keystone to building a robust system of educational malinvestment. This was further used to produce an entire generation of incompetent and unskilled, entirely dependent workers, which have since become the new slave workforce of modern corporate America.

They cannot count, can barely read or write, cannot think independently, nor critically, and can barely tie their own shoes and wipe their own asses. Left on their own they are likely to starve to death. Now American cities are on fire. These developments are directly connected.

So, to answer your question, yes, they are bad at math:)

Because the cost of a degree has been separated from the market. You can get a loan to cover all of your expenses for years no matter what your course of study. Why? Because the government not only guarantees the loans, they guarantee the interest and the debt is not dischargeable in bankruptcy. It's 100% guaranteed profit for the lender no matter the degree, the credit worthiness of the student, or the size of the loan.

This. If banks were reponsible for the loans they were making, they wouldn't give them, and people wouldn't get these stupid degrees. Same effect Usury has on everything, inflating demand for shit people would never get otherwise...at that price anyway.

Because we live in a culture where degree =intelligence, and it doesn't matter what degree you have, just having one means you are smart. So most people opt for the easiest to get degrees out there, which are the worthless ones.

The only reason to visit the unlearning centers is because you want to rub elbows. College/University is to build networks vet initiates and weed out the incompetent. You pay money to get your foot in the door. Most don't belong there though.

If you aren't trying to get initiated in to faggot circles, there's many lifetimes of focused, disciplined, pursuits you could accrue for free on the internet, all without someone's permission or assistance. There's no reason to go to one of them if your aim is education.

However, there are caveats: Everyone's aim ought to be self-employment so long as you're fully capable. But there are professions that don't lend the typical capabilities of self-employment and many aren't competent enough to actually fulfill those particular requirements such that they're better off having direction. In this case, and so long as you're aiming for an occupation that has readily available positions and makes good enough money that can nullify the loans you used rather quickly, or if you get grants/scholarships, partaking isn't too big of an issue. The main problem for typical people in these environments is saturation of job markets and competition over wages.

So, in other words, if you're capable enough and good at learning, you don't need a teacher or some sanctioned pass to practice/study. There are many ways to make money on your own. However, some people aren't that competent and need the wage crutch. Just be sure if you go to a college/university that you present your self well and make good connections and only join programs that aren't already saturated and have high demands and qualifying pay.

Otherwise, taking out giant loans that will indebt you for decades is retarded. Also, there's no reason for a woman to devote her life to an occupation. Don't you dare let your daughter ruin her future by going to college/university unless she has poor genetics or can't produce offspring and gets it all for free, either by your pockets or some grant/scholarship.

some people go to university to hook themselves a well earning spouse, usually women i met a few when i was in uni. if its not that then its because "you need to have a degree" mantra, if you ask why you wont get that coherent of a response

Yep. It's not that a bunch of people are thinking "I really want to learn as much as I can about gender studies, I know it's a massive investment of time and money, but it's definitely worth it to me". They may have literally every person in their life telling them they need a degree (along with many people on TV they've never met), then they just pick something when they get to college.

They go into college "just cause that's what you do after high school". They either have no idea what degree to get and just do basically prereq classes for 4 years OR they take real classes but change majors because it's either too difficult for them or doesn't leave them enough time to party every night.

It's overwhelmingly women and they always think they are going to land some super rare job like Art Gallery Curator or whatever the fuck.

Don't kid yourself. Victim status and virtue signaling can be profitable and emotionally satisfying to narcissist. The last two generations have been engineered to be self entitled and completely narcissistic. Thus the rise of SJWs and their political dogma.

Not saying everyone of those generations are encompassed. But they were certainly exposed.

Because people generally go to uni when they are 18 and have little to no clue about studying for the purpose of getting a job vs 'follow your dreams'.

On the other hand the only thing I have ever been good at or interested in is Music. I was never allowed to study Music or get any lessons because nobody in my life took !y interests seriously.

If I could have been classically trained and taught music production extensively from a young age I could have made millions from the songs I have, as opposed to wasting so long trying to figure everything out on my own in my bedroom.

Makes it easier to party on some parents dime... My thoughts on college are this... if you want to study engineering for example I'll pay for it. You want to study underwater cambodian basket weaving and you're gonna get told to fuck right off and pay for that yourself if ur my kid. For some sending their kid to college makes them feel like they did their job... even if all you did was piss money away on a future barista.
