Nobody who can earn a million dollars would buy an ugly painting. Being savvy with money insists that nobody would pay that much for any art, especially ugly art. It's not profound, if it's ugly it's ugly.
I was told a story when I was a kid called the emperor's New clothes where merchants convinced an emperor that they had the finest silk garments that only intelligent people could see, so to avoid sounding dumb to the merchants he said he could see them and walked around town to show them off. A simple explanation. It is not about the art, it is about the money. If you transfer a million dollars from LA to London, there are taxes and fees. If you buy a painting for a million dollars and transfer the ownership of the "painting" to someone in London, there are no fees and taxes. Even CNN admits there is a problem (cnn.com)

I know that, also buying illegal content, if I wanted to buy some sex slaves I might have to explain where a couple of grand went for my purchase. Paintings are cheap and easy to make when modern art is the standard so I throw garbage at a canvas, buy the slaves but on paper I bought the painting instead.
