The year was 1788, and the Holy Roman Empire of Austria were attempting to repel the Ottomans from the modern day Romania area.
During a scouting mission, a regiment of Austrian Hussars met with a band of gyppos, from whom they bought several barrels of alcholic beverage. Eventually the infantry caught up with the scouting party, found them all drunk and demanded a share of the brew.
An argument broke out and the Hussars began fighting their own infantry, causing such mayhem that an estimated 1000 soldiers died from 'friendly fire', allowing the Ottomans to take a forward position, as the Austrian brigade retreated while fighting itself.
I'd post this story in s/EuropeanHistory, but it is a disputed account. Watch this short video to the end to hear a discussion about what may or may not have actually happened.
