Had a disagreement with my wife over Trumps “controversial” statement regarding giving drug dealers the death penalty.

She brings up things like kids that sold marijuana don’t deserve said death penalty.

I believe there should be a gradation, but a serious threat of punishment should be there in order to discourage kids from getting into the business in the first place. Thing is, selling drugs is almost like a drug of its own, since easy money gained from preying on people’s weaknesses is hard to turn away, especially once some connections are made.

I personally believe that we should also include medical professionals into the conversation as well. How many people died from the opioid crisis? How many people were held accountable for that? Why are we focusing just on the “street” drug dealers and ignoring the corporate ones?

Nowadays, so many doctors are inept and just functionally act as pill pushers rather than actual doctors. How much suffering and death could be linked to this? Instead of telling people to get their health, diet, lifestyle, or choices in control, they just provide you with an “easy button” with side effects.

Thats pretty ridiculous. All you have to do, to see crime rates plummet is legalize all drugs. Petty crime, gang violence, cartels, and overdoses would all go way down. You could work or beg 10 hours a week and you would have enough to support your habit, less petty crime. Gangs would have nothing to fight over because distribution turf would have no value. Cartels would lose billions and they would have to run criminal operations that are a lot easier to break up like protection rackets. Drug manufacturers would be accountable for the quality of their products, so you users could actually keep track of how much their taking.

Killing desperate and addicted people that engage in victimless crimes is short sighted, stupid, expensive and dangerous. I dont trust law enforcement and all they would have to do to get anyone killed is put a 1oz bag of powder in their car.

Seems a bit naive and quite liberal in my view.

My first problem is that selling drugs is not a victimless crime - how many people have died or been irreversibly damaged by things like fentanyl or opiates? Even marijuana nowadays with excessive THC isn’t all that safe and can lead to psychological and cardiovascular problems.

Violence and gang/cartel activity would not cease, it would just change. Have you heard about how the cartels are now in the avocado industry? Those people follow the black markets, and black markets will figure out a way to stay relevant no matter what.

Shitty people will always exist and will always figure out a way to be shitty - governments in essence were developed as a way to protect us from said shitty people. We should fight to bring that concept back instead of disarming individuals further.

You cant commit a crime against yourself. You could make the same arguments to end all the decisions we get to make for ourselves. The logic youre using is the same that the left uses in an attempt to get rid of informed consent in medicine.

It is really easy for law enforcement to break up protection rackets if they dont have drug money and the power that comes with it backing them up. Once you break up a protection racket its actually gone too, its not like there are bunch of farmers putting pressure their friends and acquaintances to get them a new "protector" like there is in the drug business. You take out one dealer, and there are 4 other people waiting to take their spot regardless the consequences. Desperate people dont give a shit if they die. They live in the moment and addiction clouds peoples judgement.

Your making my point in the last part here, shitty people are going to be shitty, and the death penalty isnt a detterent. Handing shitty people a 300 billion dollar a year industry is whats crazy.
