You don’t have to beat the shit out if it, just smack it hard on the nose or the head.

I once had a big 6 month old ridgeback (60-65kg at tgat stage) and it had a go, so I slapped it so hard in the head I knocked it out. Then it’s left eye was a bit fucked/misaligned for a couple of months, so that was probably overkill. Don’t do that. And every time I’d go near it, it would run to the corner and shiver/cower and urinate in fear from PTSD.

So a short sharp smack on the snout is better, repeat if required.

I guess that might be a temporary solution, if you don't have a gun...
