No matter how many dogs I’ve owned over the years, and no matter how many I’ve lost, it’s never easy.

My old Big Boy (aka Spocky, Mr. Spock, and Circle Tail) will be at peace Monday afternoon. At 121/2 years old he’s neither the oldest dog I’ve let go/lost, nor the youngest.

I’m fortunate enough to be hooked up with a vet who will do in home visits, and I’ve used his services before. The last time was about 3 years ago on my old black lab. It was a peaceful journey. I’m hoping the same for Monday. I would rather have had a natural death, as I’ve had twice in the past, but he’s simply in too much pain and waiting any longer is cruel. It is possible he’ll expire before Monday.

In the meantime, I lay with him, talk to him, stroke him, and tell him it’s okay.

I will spend the weekend preparing his final resting place. It will be atop his favorite place to lay in the yard. He will be number seven in our little pet cemetery, which is spread out across our 1.5 acre back yard. All are at rest in their favorite spots.

He IS a good boy and truly dindu nuffin.

Please give a nod to our Big Boy, and thanks for reading.

Good on ya for giving the old boy an honorable passing at home, and not dragging him to the vet one last time.

My thoughts exactly, thank you.

For my boy we did it at home with a vet 10/10 worth it.

I did it about 3 years ago for my old black lab. It was pricey, and I’m almost afraid to find out how much more it will be on Monday, but I’m also blessed to be able to afford whatever the cost now. Agree, 10/10 worthwhile.

Only whites are capable of this much compassion for animals.

Also, why did get shoahed?

Heaven accepts Dogs, just an FYI to make you feel better.

I like to believe that all the dogs (and the couple of cats) I've had previously are waiting to welcome Big Boy and show him the way. Thank you for the kind words.

Thank you for being here with me.

It gets lonely when only five people on earth know your name.

I had an old gal a number of years back that lived to 17. We are indeed fortunate to have them with us that long. Give your guy/gal and warm snuggle from me and Big Boy.

He's the best boy and you are a good friend/family and caretaker. It's never easy, they're family. If the Big Boy can still eat, maybe give him a steak.

My most sincere condolences.

He did eat last night, don't know if he'll eat tonight as he hasn't moved all day, but yes, he'll get some good beef.

That's good, and you know he loves it. I'm sorry again friend, this part you guys are in is the worst part. I hope he goes peacefully and as painlessly as possible.

No matter how many people I see get killed or injured online a dog still makes me feel worse. They really are amazing and wonderful creatures. Shame they have such short lifespans, but they make up for it with how much enjoyment they can bring (except for when you step in their crap). God bless you and the old boy, I don't look forward to my dogs getting sick one day either.

You have my sympathies. The pain of losing your best friend is very hard to handle. Mine died of the leukemia in February. I'll say a prayer for ya buddy.

Much appreciated. And I, too, am sorry you lost yours so recently.

Thank you for giving a nice loving home to an amazing being, and surrounding him with love on his way out of this world. It is not easy, but it is the only way to let someone go who is loved.

[–] 1 pt

It is is very difficult, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm sorry to hear you're losing a good friend. Years from now you'll remember him very clearly, and realize how purely innocent and good he was, and it will be almost too much to handle. Take comfort in the good life you provided, and how that can never be taken away even after he is gone. I force myself to adopt a new dog shortly after a good one passes. It is my way of paying tribute to my lost co pilots, I care for the new dog in their memory.

Getting a new pal quickly after an old pal passes is an excellent move both for healing the human spirit, and honoring the lost companion. Mr. Spock is one of three in my pack. All senior dogs now. I've had as many as five at any one time, three is not a bad number, but I'm looking to go down to two for the foreseeable future. My remaining two are no where near death's door, fortunately, so they will receive the same love and care right up to the end before I embark on a new pack. Thank you, Amerikaner, for your words.
