Agreed that animals aren’t an ideal substitute for human relationships and affection. That being said, there are some very lonely people out there who would have nothing if they didn’t have an animal companion in their lives.

Agreed. I've been active in the animal rescue / adoption field for years. When young couples want to adopt a puppy as a surrogate child, the bile rises in the back of my throat. When adults, especially empty-nesters, want to bring a dog into their lives for the companionship, it makes my day.
