In a perfect world there would be some amount of rent control per size unit and those would make more sense than living with 3 or 4 other people and still wouldn't be 60% of a junior position salary.

What's with the stairs?

By staggering the stairs like that you can maximize run (step length) while minimizing the footprint of the stairs. If each step went the whole width of the staircase the steps could only be 3 or 4 inches deep.

I have yet to find a building code that those are legal with. Unless this is just advanced “furniture”.
