Why they were doing that research is another, perhaps more important issue, and for what benefactor(s).

It is obvious that the US deep state has a large hand in this research, through EcoHealth Aliance (Peter Daszak). What was the underlying purpose of such research for the US? I'm not sure that the interests are actually the US though, more the deep state and their extra-national allies (UN, WEF, etc). They were preparing for a great cull. This, I think has become painfully obvious based on their reaction to its escape from the WIV. This plan was already well underway with the "Climate Emergency" mania. However, they know that the climate is due for a downturn in temperature (major climate cycle with ~70 year period, its nadir was in the late '70s early '80s (Ice Age Cometh era), and it's zenith was in the mid 2010s, temperatures will be heading down towards 2035. Their plan was to have all the draconian measures in place by the early 2010s, just in time for the peak. Then they could use the natural cooling cycle to claim success and further impose restrictions on people. But, that failed. They were, thankfully, incompetent in addition to being malevolent, so they failed to implement any major changes. They continue to try, which will have no effect. But, they know that scam is a bust. So, they needed something else. They want control, so the best way to do so is to create an emergency in which they "must" take control in order to keep people "safe". They are power mad psychopaths.

For China, it seems to be a fairly obvious motivation for me. China has a rapidly approaching demographic cliff caused by the One Child Policy. They are going to be flooded with elderly people who are no longer able to work effectively and become a net drain on the economy. So, they need to fix that. It isn't really politically palatable to line them up and shoot them, or starve them to death, anymore. So, an alternative way to deal with the elderly was required. Coronaviruses are well known for knocking off the elderly who are on the verge of death, so souping one up a little (adding a furin cleavage site to the spike protein for instance) could be used to create a method of "solving" the demographic problem without ending up with obvious blood on their hands.
