Exactly. It is placed into the public common psyche as a joke - hidden in plain sight - but when mocked and ridiculed, our stupid brains remember this and immediately move to laugh it off.

EDIT: This is where the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance kicks in, for those of us lucky enough to have critical thinking capabilities. One either overcomes the contradictory evidence and formulates a new theory or outlook, or one does not and doubles, even triples down. The latter is where narcissism can be seen since they are incapable of not being right.

Side note: the term "cognative dissonance" is a plagerism of George Orwell's "double think". In his famous work, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell depicts "double think" in explicit detail. The founding paper which first describes "cognative dissonance" was published several years after Nineteen Eighty-Four.
