The canal uses a system of locks. You should read up on how the canal was built. It's a fascinating engineering feat. One I doubt we could replicate with affirmative action hires and removing white engineers.

If the reservoir dips below 895 feet — Lake Mead would reach dead pool, carrying enormous consequences for millions of people across Arizona, California, Nevada and parts of Mexico. Experts from the Bureau of Reclamation say Lake Mead stands at a tier 1 shortage, and have predicted that Lake Mead will reach a tier 2 level by 2023 and a tier 3 level possibly in 2024.
