It's not a problem of the ocean, but of lake Gatun.

Lake connects to ocean? How much difference can they be?

The canal uses a system of locks. You should read up on how the canal was built. It's a fascinating engineering feat. One I doubt we could replicate with affirmative action hires and removing white engineers.

No doubt. Can't water be pumped from the ocean at higher elevation into the lake?

They don't run out of ocean. The canal is like 40m higher than sea level. Ships pass a lock and dam where they are raised to canal elevation, then sail the canal and are lowered through a lock and dam on the other side. The drought would effect river, lake, and canal water level, not sea level.

I pondered how tides would not race through it one way and then the other before I learned this.

Sheeeeeit just pump water to fill the lake up from the ocean

By relying on only fresh water rather than building infrastructure to desalinate.

But running out of water in a ocean-to-ocean canal is a new one.

From a comment "They could send all the unsold Bud Light…"

Why do you want to turn the fish gay?

It is heart warming that so many have kept up the fight against bud light. Similar to me, I have given up eating Chinese company pork. That means only buying from local places because they own virtually the entire US market now thanks to our feckless politicians.
