They're reliability is prolly the same, but the speeds will shit on USB flash.

Reliability is most definitely not the same, unless you purchase a cheap, no-name SSD.

Flash drives are notoriously unreliable.

What are your experiences with flash drives? Corrupt data or complete defect?

I have two completely defect USB sticks by the crap brand Hama, possibly at least one caused by a voltage spike on the USB port of a Grundig RRCD 3720 boom box.

In my case just drives that end up dying. I had a selection of PNY 32GB USB 2.0 sticks that have close to a 30% failure rate and a selection of SanDisk 32GB USB 2.0 with a slightly lower rate of failure.

Both solid brands, was really surprised because my experience up to this point had been really good in regards to USB flash drives (I've got multiple 4gb sticks that have lost their protective cases and the boards are exposed, no data loss yet).

Who knows.

Why is the reliability suspect? I've had dozens of memory sticks go bad on me but every one of my NVME SSDs is still working fine.

go bad

Do you mean corrupt files or not being recognized by the operating system at all?

They stop being usable. I've never knowingly had data corruption on an otherwise usable memory stick. There are utilities that will sometimes 'revive' a bad stick but any data will be deleted in the process.

I don't know how good heat dissipation is with those cases.

Heat is not going to be a problem. For one the data transfer rate via USB is relatively slow. As well you won't be using it like a hard drive that has constant reading and writing.

There is also the limit of the computer. And memory sticks are more compact. For my speed test results, see my comment above.
