They stop being usable. I've never knowingly had data corruption on an otherwise usable memory stick. There are utilities that will sometimes 'revive' a bad stick but any data will be deleted in the process.

Maybe it was connected to some unstable power source such as an old RRCD 3720 CD player which could cause power spikes.
