This is a good rule to follow.

It's not enough to just have a copy of a directory on the same block device. You need to save your data onto another device entirely.

Past that, do it on another machine. Take it further:

  • Back your shit up to an external drive that you only connect for syncing purposes
  • Back this external drive up to another one and store it in a safe, only syncing it a couple times per year
  • Have another one that you only sync yearly and store that at a relative's house
  • Sync your shit to an S3 bucket with at-rest encryption

Bonus points if you encrypt your shit before you even store it.

Store your encryption key in your brain or on paper in a bank lockbox.

An external Raid 0 array is convenient and robust.

S3 has a lot of reliability with two big caveats:

  • There is no recovering deleted data

  • Anyone with a warrant can view your data
