TLDR; They probably think its fun to mess with the rudder.

From the post:

>Killers whales have caused mayhem for boaters since 2020, ramming into the rudders of more than 600 ships and causing many to sink. Marine biologists have now revealed that their seemingly aggressive behavior may actually just be the actions of boredom among the highly intelligent animals. In a report released on Friday, biologists, government officials and other marine representatives said the boat rudders are a prime toy for orcas in open waters.

Maybe they can't stand the constant noise of all the boats anymore and just want to hear themselves talk.

I moved out of a city because the constant cacophony drove me nuts!

I lived very close to a larger city center for a couple of years. I was always grouchy and short tempered and couldn't really figure out why.

Moved to a much quieter and spaced out community a LONG way from the city center and my mood improved a lot. Traveling back to the city center/area I notice that there is just some constant "hum" or something that never stops even at night. It is infuriating at least to me. That is not even taking into account all of the damn people, shitty drivers and crime.

You are so right. Very much better listening to birds during the day and frogs at night!

Until now I had never lived somewhere that you only hear crickets at night and not a ton of car noise/honking/police/etc..

Its still too "big" for me with how I feel and I want even more space in a even quieter place but its an improvement.

And, after playing, it began propagating the behavior among the group until it became as widespread as it is now.

Sounds like one one of those tik tok challenges amongst humans

The boats deserved it.
