Firstly, I think it is necessary to just take a moment and note, once again, how bizarre this change of language actually is. It is jarring to anyone to have the “the” dropped from “The Ukraine,”

I've seen him mention this in previous articles. Ukraine never had a 'the' in front of it. That's like saying The Canada or The Uganda. What the hell is he smoking?

It was "the Ukraine" before it became politically correct to call it "Ukraine". This happened maybe a decade or so ago. Even though you don't remember this, you probably do remember the switch from "Kiev" to "Kyiv" (bizarrely pronounced "Keev", which isn't any more accurate than saying Kiev), so I don't see what the issue is with the point he's making here.

Ok, I read up on it and now see the distinction. If you're referring to Ukraine as a country, it should be without the 'the'. If you want to refer to Ukraine as a vaguely defined region, then you'd add the prefix. Ukraine is obviously a country (although a basketcase of one) so I don't see the merit of referring to it with the prefix, other than to imply that it isn't one.

You're missing the point. He spells it out in pretty clear terms in the article. There's a reason what your "allowed" to say constantly changes for arbitrary reasons. Anyway, best of luck to you.
