Cathaoirleach isn’t the same as a mayor the way Americans might understand it. Cathaoirleach means chairman, and they are elected only by the other councillors to act as chair for meetings. And she’s not even cathaoirleach of Longford county council, she’s chair for the municipal council for Longford town, i.e. she’s a town councillor who will chair meetings of the town council. There is significantly more power in a strong fart than is held by a town council. And Longford town is the armpit of Ireland.
