Very similar, yes. The US has no pressing reason to consider reunifying with the UK, and proposing such a referendum would be treasonous.
I give you a point for trying but I don't think it's a great analogy. I don't think the identity and culture of China and Taiwan are as far separate as the US and UK.
Honestly it sounds to me like you're caught up in jews+weimerica = bad therefore prc = good.
While I fully agree that the Taiwanese are between a rock and a hard place, they have more latitude to steer their own course as a US ally than as a communist possession.
