I think the author is very short sighted to claim that the chinese are merely "taking advantage of opportunities." They're engaging in massive espionage and corruption. They're not just taking what's being passed around on a plate, they're paying the waiter to pass the plate to them and taking everything on the plate. The only reason they're not doing everything the jews are doing is because they haven't had as long to get entrenched.
Also, Taiwan is wise not to allow a referendum on reunification: What purpose could it possibly serve? That's like asking why the US doesn't hold a referendum on reunification with the UK. Aside from anything else it would be a massive demonstration of weakness, signalling the leadership is willing to surrender (which would possibly cause a war). If the result were for remaining independent it's not like the PRC are going to accept that result. They'll keep claiming Taiwan is theirs and call the referendum corrupt. And they'll do their best to rig it in their favour anyhow.

Very similar, yes. The US has no pressing reason to consider reunifying with the UK, and proposing such a referendum would be treasonous.
I give you a point for trying but I don't think it's a great analogy. I don't think the identity and culture of China and Taiwan are as far separate as the US and UK.
