If you have a smartphone (or even a cell phone) you're being tracked. The EULA people sign allows those companies to do pretty much whatever they want with the information.
Yeah, the cellular network knows where the devices it's talking to are (within an area) at all times, that's how it keeps track of what tower is in use and what the next handoff will be. That's just how it works.
You're not getting what I'm saying. The government and other organizations are being GIVEN all of this tracking information in real time. They say "watch out for the apps" but are in fact already using this tracking information, a direct violation of the 4th amendment. They are just normalizing it now with apps. Push back on it all you want, but read the EULA of your google or apple account and you'll see people freely gave away the 4th, and 1st amendment 15 years ago.
No, I understand, this is just a way for the industry players to hand your data over with your consent on an instant basis. Otherwise it would just be quietly given to them in FCC required "performance metrics" that happened to have all that data anyway, data that is being used to violate the constitution.
The Apples and Googles are absolved of any Liability, and no one is going to be able to fight the biggest City Hall. You can't complain about what you gave away willingly.
