Yeah, the project for the custom firmware is OSS. You can modify it or compile it yourself and don't have to rely on a blob. One of the projects: https://github.com/atc1441/ATC_MiThermometer

Yep. Then again, most people wont even consider the idea of "re-flashing" something even if they are given easy instructions and a blob they don't know what is in it..
Maybe a decade ago people were more willing to "DIY" a system or build their own stuff. Now people just want to scan a QR code and send all of their data to China because its easier. Don't get me started on shit like "Echo".. Im rolling a local-only system for that too that works with Home Assistant.
