There were saw mills in these parts back in those days, water power! I’m sure they kept they’re saws sharp and drive a nail in one swift blow!
Saw mills would provide the product but all end cuts and rips were by hand also, ever drive a few thousand nails a day? Been there, done that. Your hand gets so cramped you can't open it after you let go of the hammer.
Same here, work like that gave you some good guns though!
Not denying that it’s hard work, just pointing out that they had saw mills. I remember when covid first hit and active hid under a rock, I sawed a cedar tree in half with a handsaw just for something to do.
