Clearance: The bridge has a notoriously low 8-foot-6-inch (8-6) clearance, which has been the site of numerous vehicle collisions over the years.
Outcome: An 81-year-old male patient who was being transported in the back was ejected from the vehicle by the force of the impact. He suffered a serious injury to his wrist and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Legal Action: The patient and his wife subsequently filed a lawsuit against the South Plainfield Rescue Squad and South Plainfield EMS, alleging negligence and that the government entities maintained a dangerous condition.
