Reefs can be on top of underwater cliffs. I'm not sure what the chart looks like in this area, but it is possible one side of the ship's hull was breached, filled with water and then it tilted and fell off to the other side. I'm curious to learn more about this because modern ships have all types of compartments and safety measures to prevent this. In other words you really have to fuck up big time.
