This engine was still producing some thrust, albeit spectacularily, and once the pilots brought the thrust lever of the offending engine to idle, in order to stop the compressor stall and hopefully clear it, the aircraft could fly back around and land.
This is the type of thing every pilot trains an ungodly amount to handle, sometimes twice a year, depending on the approved recurrent training syllabus.
