When I was I high school, and had been told my whole life that we were all equal, I did something I know better than to do now. I went to the local government employment authority, and applied for a paid internship. Part of the application process was an aptitude test. APTITUDE. I foolishly took it. I scored 100%. I did not get a job, however. There was one bonus question I failed. Ethnicity. If I had written “Hispanic”, my final score would have been 115%. If I can written “black”, my score would have been 125%. I challenged the proctor, “how can this be an aptitude test if others are scored higher for something other than their aptitude?” The answer was “Fuck off, Whitey.” I was 17, and I was furious. Now I decline to provide my ethnicity on questionnaires.
