I always stay away from crowds on New Year's Eve. It is what I call "drunk night." It's the one night of the year when everyone, including tea-drinking grannies and Mormons, believe it is OK for them to get blind, staggering, pissing drunk. Basically, everyone turns into an Irishman on New Year's. And these drunken sinners think they are obliged to shoot off guns of all description, loaded with live rounds, in all directions.

Yeah, at least on St. Patrick's Day they use their fists.

Bullets and other hard metal objects which fall from the sky are very dangerous. We were up on a line facing some paddies and VC. Vietnamese Air Force flew 2 Sandy's (AE-1) over at what seemed like 500 feet, and let loose with cannon fire on Charlie. One of our Marines got hit right in the top of his head with an empty 20mm cartridge case which was ejected from the aircraft in a steady stream.

It penetrated all the way down through his helmet into his head and he was dead as Chelsy's Nuts in a split second. It was deemed a "friendly fire incident" and "line of duty". Anyway, he was dead and got to go home, a lucky Marine. We stayed behind and cleaned up the left-overs over in the paddy. Some of the VC were literally torn to pieces, BTW, as the 20mm rounds were HE and Incendiary.

Just another 1967 day in I Corps dicking around Hoi An and the reverse slope of Hill 327

The only good Dink is a dead dink.

I was woken up by .223 fire last night. Good thing I live in a brick house with sheetrock walls.

Cities are no go zones.
