I always carried a knife when walking my dog late at night. Once some drunk immigrant tried to start trouble and I scared him off with it.

So glad I had It that evening.

And so you should. At the very least a nice knife you can deploy in a fluid motion from the pocket. Brandishing is a very worthwhile deterrent.

Edit: Don't be scared to use it.
