There is never an acceptable excuse to carry a knife, and don't hang around with those who do.

I always carried a knife when walking my dog late at night. Once some drunk immigrant tried to start trouble and I scared him off with it.

And so you should. At the very least a nice knife you can deploy in a fluid motion from the pocket. Brandishing is a very worthwhile deterrent.
