His hands were so tied the judificial system regularly plays activist. I have no sympathy for the judge, only malice.
They act like the judges hands were tied, but it likely came down to the prosecutor allowing this murderer to plead to second degree murder rather than first degree. The judge doesn't have to allow the plea bargain and could have rejected it. The idea that CA was more lenient in 1974 is B.S. They were a death penalty state (en.wikipedia.org) at the time and this piece of trash should have been executed.
