"rare fusion of human diseases"
Riiiiight... otherwise known as, "created in a lab". I really can't understand why anyone bought the zoonotic transfer hypothesis in the first place. It was so obviously bullshit. A bat corona virus does not spread to humans and instantly become airborne transmissible between humans with an almost perfect affinity to the human ACE2 receptor with the inclusion of a furon cleavage site to allow efficient infection of the attached cell. That just does not happen, it would be like rabbits spontaneously evolving wings and immediately transforming into powerful and agile flying animals.
I think a part of the zoonotic transfer story was to use it as a tool of demoralization. To force knowledgeable people, people who should know better, scientists and doctors, to accept and more importantly to repeat an obvious lie. Once that was done, their spirit was broken, they repeated something that was an obvious lie, that they knew to be a lie.
The only thing that went "wrong" in this plan was, I think, that the virus escaped from the lab before they were "ready". The plan was to have a much more virulent virus, one that would actually have a mortality rate of 3-10%. This would have allowed them to fully terrorize the target populations. This virus would have also been better targeted at the elderly, though they had that aspect down pretty well. Then, the "vaccine" campaign would by used to force compliance, introduce digital ID and "vaccine" passports in order to gain full control over the entire population.
The people behind COVID committed the greatest crime outside of wartime in the history of Earth, but their intent was for it to have been orders of magnitude worse. There is no punishment in this world that is adequate for what they have done.

There’s 2 possibilities.
It couldn’t be done or couldn’t be done in the timeline they wanted so they lied and that also goes back to you “demoralization” option.
It was a lot more potent in the lab but failed in the real world and they had to go with it.
