They did it openly. They used a human embryonic kidney cell line (HEK)293T/17 for testing and published the results: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.09.08.280818v1.full

The RT op-ed is good because they stick to the facts. HEK 293 cells are a line obtained from a fetus in 1973. Others try to tell us now that fresh aborted fetuses were used in testing or even production of the vaccine.
