This is just a variation of "the democrats are the real racists!" Its gacha politics - where a manufactured leader calls out the "other side" to self-promote. You then identify with that leader because someone is finally, superficially, representing you, in some capacity or other. But its a gimme, and the next argument that the national discourse becomes is "well maybe hes terrible, but hes not as bad as the other guy! Maybe this time the GOP (or other party) and this guy who seems to say *all the right things at all the right time* wont turn out the same as the last guy!" Except they always do, because its gacha: gambling on a rigged game, where the house always wins, and the result is never as shiny as the promise. Hence Trump, hence "drain the swamp", hence leading his supporters into a trap, hence all the free publicity he got from the media, even bad publicity, cementing him as the only viable choice in the minds of the right, hence him appointing *more* swamp rats.
