So doing your job qualifies you to be considered a hero ?

They sure do think so....
They don't recognize the unexpected or rare incidents such as this a part of their job. In their own mind, they aren't signing up for the job to put their own lives at risk.
I have a sibling who got out of nursing during the ebola scare around 2016 or so. The idea that she might have to face that was enough to essentially convert her to a stay at home mother. A net positive I'd say.
Yeah , lots of people are ok with the job until it counts.
The police are the same to an extent, they'll go to any extreme in the name of "officer safety", including shooting your well mannered pet dog.
