I went to my mechanic yesterday and they have a sign up that says since they cannot ask you about your medical status that if you aren't wearing a mask they will assume you have a medical reason not to wear one. The office staff weren't wearing masks but the shop manager was.

>there are no mask police

They may not be police, but they are the health department and if one of your customers turns you in you can get a fine. I have no idea what legal difference the signage makes but it's worth trying. I think you would have a defense that it is illegal to ask. The bigger stores in town have signs that say you absolutely must wear a mask, no exceptions.

Edit: This is not in NJ however.

Of course not. You may need to put some bullshit sign up on your door but there are no mask police. You could probably even put another sign up that says something like “free breathing is permitted in this store despite local ordinances” or “anyone not wearing a mask will be assumed to have a medical or religious exemption and not be harassed” and get the point across.

Give the guys who run a call for advice.

Of course they can go after you. The law is no longer relevant. Feelz over realz!
