I am absolutely aware of the cuckoos. The first time I read about it I thought “oy vey, why won’t they take care of that egg? So antisemitic!” There are some ant and bee species prone to parasitism that are also really good models for comparison as well.
That article is a load of shit. A lot of cuckoo's will destroy the eggs before placing their own. There would be no incentive for the birds to stay and raise a foreign offspring and there would be no fear of retaliation. Do not ever use "I fucking love science" as a source. Additionally, the baby cuckoos may have some anti-predator value. It's just a science article and you can follow the sources to find out more if you like without going through the journalist lens.
