Same reason why people buy a lottery ticket. People buy lottery tickets to fantasize about having money, what they would do with it.
They take the test because of anxiety. They want to get it to get it over with (and to confirm their fears are real). Or they get a negative and relieve their anxiety. It's strictly a reaction to the stress of media reporting.

Hey now, Im guilty of fantasizing about lottery tickets. I mean someone always wins. To be clear I buy maybe 5 a year.
