Grand parents has this. Then they upgraded to a newer one that hand a full fledged remote. Interestingly enough, the next gen remote with all the buttons was ultrasonic as well, but it was electrically ultrasonic and had a 9v battery.
You could point and press a button (only some not all) it at the cat and the cat would cock its head.
I had one of the Sony trinitron remotes that was one of the first IR, rounded on each side like you would hold it with both hands. That triniton was a 27” tube, with a total square wood case. I loved it back then because you could sit shit on the top of it.
