So let's resolve your incorrect assumption within the metric system as well. The unit of measurement isn't kilometer, the unit of measurement is meter. You then add a prefix with the size of your choice. Kilo is 1000 (10³), so 1km is 1000 meters. Nothing is stopping you from using the next prefix, mega (10⁶). 1Mm is 1 million meters or 620 murican miles. If bigger is better, I'd take the mighty Megameter over the puny murican mile any day. Imagine if data units were in murican instead of SI-prefixes. There wouldn't be byte, kilobyte, megabyte and gigabyte. Instead it would be inchbyte, footbyte, milebyte.
