I’ll give you that, no telling what will show up in any particular stone when it’s subjected to heat abuse.

The stone probably won't heat up much at all, but the metal touching it will expand quite a bit, even in just the sunlight. The expanding metal will put a lot of pressure on the tight fit to the stone and it can cause the stone to crack or at least chip on the edges. Expansion joints are found all over the engineering world for that very reason.

Oh bluestone heats up for sure. There is actually a quarter inch on the sides and it’ll be slid forward a bit. Once I thermal the edge we’ll be a solid 3/8 around.

Ye ol’ BlackStone griddle. Love cooking bacon, eggs and hash browns on mine. That bacon aroma drives the neighbor’s dog crazy.

Built hundreds of masonry barbecues over the years with all kinds of tops, griddles, grills, warmers and burners. Generally figured for 1/8” max clearance each side. Don’t know of any that have ever cracked from the heat.
