I saw this the other day and I think I could build a modern rig using an old IBM PC clone case. Using eBay and few other seller places it seems easy enough to get a case in good shape. I know cutting will be involved because a modern motherboard uses a completely different layout. I wish the guy had posted the rear of his build to get a reference.

Thoughts?

That is correct, the 5150 used a completely proprietary layout because there wasn't any real spec or guidelines at the time. The XT was similarly slightly different even though the cases looked the same.

The pictures are of an XT case, make sure you're getting the one you need.

I will say the PC and XT had absolutely miserable airflow to the point of machine-killing - even for those old 8088 CPUs. When you get an XT case, pull the cover off - there's probably black tape across some ventilation holes on the front. That was an attempt by IBM to correct the terrible airflow in those cases. Just something to keep in mind because today's stuff generates a lot more heat.

I found this...might have to scrap this idea before it get's started. Found this on PC part picker.

OR...the guy who built it used a mini-itx board.

Holy sheet that's messy. I bet that thing gets hotter than satan's asscrack in a lava spa.

They're cool cases and all but I guess it's what you're trying to achieve.

Maybe if he used low power components like an AMD APU with integrated GPU it might work. I definitely wouldn't try shoving a modern GPU into something like that.

At that point though just buy something premade from minisforum and have the exact same thing without all the trouble.
