I don't know a whole lot about hard drives. The interwebs says it's ok but they also are trying to sell me a drive at the same time.

My current drive: 6TB WD60EZRX (used mostly for data backups). I've had the drive since ~2015...

Drive I'm looking at: 8TB Seagate ST8000NM0045 (I can get them for $70 each (open box)) they are Sata not SAS.

that will work well for back up.

You sound somewhat knowledgeable about hdds. I got 2 drives for a reason. One will be so I can use dd to create an image of my old drive. And the other is to (hopefully) move the recovered data from the image onto. So my question is how do I repair the image of my old drive? I know how to make the image, but it seems to me that if the old drive is bad then it would create a bad image. Am I wrong in my assumption? Is there an easier way to try and recover the data from the old drive? It has a bad superblock and I am unable to restore from any of the backups due to bad blocks.

Ugh, dd will copy as is, so bad blocks and all. There are utilities that can help rebuild the info. Depending on OS and underlying format of the disk. If it is critical, I'd send it out to Drive Savers.I have used them in the past, they are EXPENSIVE, but they have always gotten the most critical data back. If it's personal data, try the free versions of the utilities to see if they work, then decide if it's worth paying the fee.
