To people saying "Hahaha Linux 2.5%", you DO realize that that 2.5% has happened within the past 2 or 3 years, right? Since Proton became such a great overlay, and distros have gotten user friendly DE's and package management, Linux has begun picking up steam steadily. Will it ever beat Windows? No. Not even Mac can do that. But I'd predict that by the end of the 2020's, Linux will be close to or at 5% share.

Watch where the Linux growth basically halts. They changed how they estimated Linux desktops. In reality Linux desktops were steadily growing far beyond this but they changed estimation methodology significantly under counts desktops. We know this because of Linux desktops used to report installs as they happened and even these numbers (actual physically confirmed installations) were under counted.

Linux basically has a 10% market share right now. If not more. It's also strange they tossed ChomeOS into the mix given it's a Linux desktop. Yet another method of under counting.

The truth is, the year of the Linux desktop came and went some five years or more back and no one noticed. You see it everywhere now. Gaming is starting to normalize on it too. Which is a huge driver. But the powers that be work in overdrive to reduce reported counts because they fear this will accelerate migrations away from Windows, especially given the idiocy Windows is pulling these days.

Neat video but is terribly inaccurate.

Didn't even think to include Chromebook at Android, you're absolutely right. There's also the factor that most Linux users are VERY cagey about disclosing their data, so you'll never know how many installs exist because the users literally won't tell you....unless they're on Arch :)

A lot of computers can't be purchased without a Windows licence. My last three computers came with a windows license. All three are counted as Windows. All never never ran Windows. That's -3 for Linux and +3 for Windows. In reality it's -3 for Windows and + 3 for Linux. For a total delta of 6.

This is just one of the games they play. I can't stress enough just how conservative the counts for Linux are that I've provided to you. Some market indicators strongly imply Linux has the same desktop count as MacOS. Think about that.
