Finally caved in and bought a new laptop. I wanted something beefy enough without breaking the bank. Best Buy had this Asus on sale for $1200 and it seemed to fit my requirements.

  • 16 GB ram
  • 1 TB SSD
  • Geforce RTX 2060 max Q
  • Ryzen 4900HS CPU

Unfortunately I now gotta learn Windows 10. I haven't used a PC after Windows 7.

I wanted something with enough balls to play games for a while. With Cyberpunk 2077 coming out next month I think I'll be able to play at decent graphics settings.

It's been about 10 years since I've bought a PC. I've been getting by with an iPad mini 3 for the last years but it's starting to get slow loading some websites if it can even load them at all. Now I'll be able to share dank memes without trouble.

The Ryzen seems to be a good CPU. I've been reading good things about it. I feel better giving AMD a shot this time over Intel. My last laptop had a Core 2 Duo. Which was fine 10 years ago. Fucking time flies.

Not yet. Just started setting up. Playing a video on youtube and the speakers sound good. I'm gonna install Steam soon and see what's up. I'll also install 3dmark to see what's up. I'm a little rusty on Windows since I've been using Ubuntu and the iPad for so long.

Enjoy it man, upgrades can be mind blowing depending on what you came from. Sounds like you got a fast rig now. (you do)

Yeah I've amazed how cheap HD's are now. 14 TB drives for around 200-250 dollars. Who the fuck needs 14 TB unless you're running a Plex server. And the SSD's have come down in price tremendously.

argh.. fucking steam isn't letting me log in or reset my password. I had to send an email ticket. what a crock of shit. I know I haven't used it in a long time but still.

Heres a few tweaks I do to make Windows 10 less fucking obnoxious and gay

Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors, set Choose your color to Dark

Disable action center (winbuzzer.com) (use regedit method on Home edition)

Clear up your start menu. Uninstall anything you arent going to use and unpin everything from the tile area on the right side

Disable cortana, go into settings and uncheck everything, hide it from taskbar using right click

Go into settings and uncheck all the settings under Privacy > Diagnostics and feedback. Set diagnostic data to required and NOT optional

I also like to Disable Telemetry (techpout.com) (use method 2)

Theres probably some other things I do but I cant think of them right now

Thanks. The dark setting is much better. I denied Cortana most of its settings as it seemed to want to share everything with the cloud. I'll review your other suggestions tomorrow when I'm not drunk. I had a few shots of whiskey tonight to celebrate the new PC.

When installing a new version of W10 i literally select Skip and No to everything. Then i disconnect the internet to force it to make an Offline account so I dont have to be wired into Microcock Live at all times. I dont think you can go back and fix these things once youre past that section so I didnt include it in the list

Learn linux

I know a little linux. I've had Ubuntu running on my old laptop for years. I just felt it was finally time to upgrade the laptop and try something new.

For something new, I'd recommend something less painful, like self-flagellation or terapanation..

If I absolutely need Windows for a program, I use a virtual machine via Virtual Box.

PS. Nice machine.
