There will be a time where we have autonomous taxies. They may be cheap enough to be a viable alternative to car ownership.

The danger is the control you give up. Want to go to a political rally? Sorry travel has been suspended to that area. Even the tech they will be putting into cars to stop drunk driving could be used for this purpose. They will simply be able to shut down your car.
